This year’s Artist-in-Residence program brought 8th graders to El Fresco in Little Havana, a vibrant creative space owned by multifaceted artist Daniel Fila, also known as Krave. Over five immersive days, students worked alongside an exceptional lineup of Miami-based creatives — Daniel Fila, visual artist and muralist; 2NES UNOe, animator; Raymond Adrian, Senior Visual Designer at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM); and Gina Salvatore, fiber artist. The experience was a powerful reminder that some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond the classroom walls — through hands-on collaboration, real creative work, and direct connection with working artists shaping Miami’s cultural landscape. This experience gave our students a rare glimpse into the professional artistic world happening right here in the heart of Miami.

An unforgettable finale to the Artist in Residence program unfolded at this year’s Gallery Walk, as Upper School Director Mrs. Geimer introduced acclaimed artist Daniel Fila to a crowd of eager students and families. In the days leading up to the event, the Cushman community watched with anticipation as a stunning collaborative mural took shape on the side of the Kalb Library — a living, evolving work of art that brought creativity to life right before their eyes. The completed mural, representing the heart of Cushman from Cubs to Cougars, stood as a vibrant testament to the journey every student takes within these blue gates and the spirit that unites them all — making for a truly memorable conclusion to a remarkable program.
