Curating Character

Cushman Culture

The Cushman School empowers our students to discover their passions and realize their true potential to become Innovators of Change in an environment that is both ambitious and joyful.

The warm, nurturing environment at Cushman is intentional. We take great pride in ensuring a culture of camaraderie, inclusivity and kindness.

We know that feeling happy, safe and supported optimizes learning because children enjoy coming to school, and so do our faculty, staff and administration.

We like to laugh, smile and celebrate that we are members of the same Cushman family acquiring knowledge and making a difference together. With that school-wide enjoyment, comes great enthusiasm for a life-long love of learning.

Character Comes First
At all stages of life and in all professions, it’s beneficial to learn from one another, support each other and constantly evolve. This growth mindset is critical for success in our dynamic global landscape and in our quest to make the world a better place.

The Cushman School may continue to access its campus, technology and programming to meet the growing needs of its learners, but the development of our students’ character continues to be relevant and critically important.

Almost a century ago, our founder, Dr. Laura Cushman, believed that a child who demonstrates personal and joint responsibility and accountability, is courteous, empathetic and kind and demonstrates industrious, hard-working behavior will achieve his or her personal academic best. These endeavors—industry, courtesy, responsibility, and scholarship—continue to serve as the pillars of every aspect of our programming and school life.

From even the youngest age, students learn how to apply the practice of these endeavors into their daily life at home and school. It’s so important that beginning with grade four, students are assessed monthly on their demonstration of the Four Endeavors through the Honor Card system. Through this evaluation, a student can earn the right to serve as a member of the Student Council. This character first philosophy develops a ‘happy’ child and continues through high school.

Take a walk through our campus, on any given day, and you’re sure to feel our school culture through our smiling students and the entire Cushman family!
