Shark Tagging Adventure with The University of Miami: A Dive into Marine Science

At The Cushman School, we pride ourselves on creating extraordinary educational experiences that spark curiosity, inspire learning, and promote teamwork. Recently, our high school students had the unforgettable opportunity to participate in a shark tagging expedition with researchers from the University of Miami. It was an incredible day filled with hands-on learning, scientific discovery, and moments that will surely become lifelong memories.

Shark Tagging Field Trip

A Thrilling Day on the Water

Our young marine enthusiasts dove into the world of field research by catching and tagging five sharks, a barracuda, and a remora. Each catch became a fascinating lesson in marine biology as students assisted the researchers in collecting important data.

Here’s what the students got to do:

  • Species Identification: Students learned to distinguish different shark species and how to identify their unique characteristics.
  • Gender Identification: Researchers guided the students in determining the gender of each shark, an essential step in understanding marine populations.
  • Measurements: Using measuring tools, the students recorded total length, girth, and fin lengths, honing their skills in precision and documentation.
  • Health Assessments: The team conducted ultrasounds on female sharks, discovering that one blacktip shark was pregnant! They also collected tissue, blood, and parasite samples for further study.
  • Satellite Tagging: Each shark was fitted with a satellite tag, allowing researchers to track their movements and gain valuable insights into their behaviors and habitats.

Beyond the Science

The day wasn’t just about data collection—it was a masterclass in teamwork and responsibility. Students worked in small groups to set lines with bait and floats, ensuring the researchers could locate their catches later. The energy, enthusiasm, and collaboration among the students were inspiring to witness.

Why Experiences Like This Matter

This adventure reflects Cushman’s commitment to a holistic education, where hands-on experiences deepen learning and foster a connection to the natural world. By engaging with real-world challenges, our students not only develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills but also cultivate a sense of stewardship for our planet.
