It is that time of year to lasso our favorite books and ‘round-up’ for The Cushman School’s 16th annual Reading Round-Up. Everyone, children and adults, were encouraged to dress in western attire! Our objective remains to create chances for parents to participate actively, and this occasion serves as an excellent opportunity for our Cushman community to come together and share in the joy of reading.
Set on the Primary School’s playground, children and parents relaxed on blankets and picnic tables and engaged in ‘Parent Literacy Circles’. In addition to the Parent Literacy Circle time, children had the opportunity to listen to and speak with storytellers and published authors. We were thrilled to have Ms. Fia Aliotta, a speech-language pathologist and mindfulness teacher who is also a Cushman parent! Ms. Aliotta brings us Leo’s Secret Key, a beautiful story about mindfulness and compassion. We were also pleased to have Mr. Jesse Jordan, with his original story, Smilin’ Simon on Blueberry Street. Mr. Jordan is a Global Studies teacher in Cushman’s Middle School and a captivating storyteller; his story speaks about food groups and cultural food preferences. We were also excited to highlight Miss Sudan Eubanks, Cushman High School student, who brings us “Reading with Royalty,” an initiative she developed. As a distinguished teen delegate for the Miss Black America Pageant 2023, Miss Eubanks sought to foster imagination and connect hospitalized children to the outside world during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Reading Round-Up event coincides with the Spring Book Fair which will be open in the library through April 18th as well as our Cushman Cares collection of new and gently used children’s books through April 19th. The books from the Cushman Cares collection drive will help stock the 78 “Books for Free” shelves sponsored by the Miami-Dade Book Fair in our community.
Thank you to The Cushman School family for making this event so fun and meaningful and sharing the joy of reading with our school community and beyond!
