The Cushman Library

The Cushman School Library strives to foster a love of reading in all of our students. From nursery through eighth grade, the library works with students and classrooms to promote literacy and meet information needs. The library staff works with teachers and students regularly with the selection of developmentally appropriate book selections and curriculum integration.

In an effort to keep everyone informed of our programs and policies, here is an outline of what you can expect from your library.

Every student visits the library at least once a week for a regularly scheduled half hour lesson. Primary Library includes story time, quiet reading time, and an array of fun activities. The goal is to introduce students to the basics of library: choosing books, properly caring for books, and when appropriate, how to check out and return books independently. Elementary Library introduces story elements, genres, award winning literature and basic research techniques. Elementary and Middle School Library students are encouraged to explore and form individual opinions on various literary styles as well as continuing with more detailed research skills (e.g. ,writing a correct bibliography).
The library is open after school Monday through Thursdays until 4:00 PM. Parents and/or students may use this added time to select and check out books or study.
The Cushman School hosts two annual Book Fairs.
The Accelerated Reader program is offered to students on an individualized basis. If you and your child’s teacher feel that this would be beneficial, special times can be arranged for choosing books and taking quizzes. Families who have chosen to utilize this program report great success, whether their child is an advanced reader looking for a challenge or a reluctant reader needing to build literacy skills.
The Birthday Book Club is open to students of all ages. This is a wonderful way to honor your child and help build our library’s collection. For a suggested $20.00 donation, your child may choose a new book from our Birthday Book Shelf that will be dedicated to him or her. The book will then be presented to your child during morning flag salute by someone from our library team.
