A Day in the Life of a Cushman Middle School Cougar
A sea of students, equipped, courteous, and prepared trickle onto The Cushman Middle School campus in the early morning hours. The students, so unique and diverse, rushing about, socializing, organizing and ordering lunch before lining up for our morning flag salute. Half awake, they salute their country, listen to the necessary announcements, and head off to the home base of their advisory class.
Soon, the advisory classes disperse upon instructions from their co-advisory teachers and the rush to first period elective begins. Middle school electives present a student with a variety of enriching and engaging options of exploring a personal passion. From Video Production, Portfolio Art, Cartooning & Musical Theatre to Year Book, Economics and World Languages, the scope of captivating choices abound. The intriguing classes awaken the ‘tweens mind and swings its participants into the school vibe of middle school life. The second it turns 9:20 a.m.., it’s time for academic classes to begin.
On all five days of the week, middle school scheduling is supple and the days flow smoothly as students interchange between block days of three academic classes a day and period days of visiting each class. The faculty, committed and unwavering in their academic and character developing goals, approach each class with unparalleled passion for their profession and students.
And so on and so forth, science, math, Latin, Spanish, english, and social studies are all important pieces of middle school life with engaging simulations, interesting projects, committed teachers, respectful classmates, and captivating topics of discussion. In between the inspiring flow of knowledge and asking questions, the students have lunch, either homemade or ordered specially from local restaurants whereupon friends have a time to socialize outside in the Miami sun.
Soon it is time for the daily rush of physical education with its varied quarterly programming from health, life skills, fitness training and sports. And at day’s end, as the middle school community assembles for our traditional afternoon flag assembly, enthusiasm continues to emerge with the onset of after school clubs, athletics and returning home.
