Cushman Philosophy
Philosophy:
Our philosophical approach from Dr. Laura Cushman's beginning days revolves around character development through courtesy, industry, responsibility, and scholarship. Dr. Cushman believed that: "a school seeks to develop the child mentally, physically and in character growth. To do this the child must be placed in happy surroundings, be properly adjusted to his work, and have wholesome experiences. The creation of such a school is our aim:”
The perpetuation of that aim is at the core of The Cushman School's philosophy today.
Standards:
The following aims are set up as standards:
- A happy attitude.
- Acceptance of the tasks of growing and learning as a personal responsibility.
- Industry and perseverance in accomplishing these accepted tasks.
- Honesty with self and with others in every phase of living.
- Growth in ability to attack learning problems and to use judgment in changing situations.
- Self control and poise.
- Wholesome personal habits.
- An attitude that seeks to understand others' point of view and is ever tolerant and kind.
- Gracious, unfailing courtesy.
- Appreciation that enrich life.
Vision:
The Cushman School maintains its focus on character development as a means of teaching values and virtues from which children grow in confidence and self-discipline. The Cushman School also believes that small classes make challenging academic work exciting for both students and their teachers. And lastly, Cushman aims to perpetuate a family atmosphere -- the Cushman Spirit -- which has always prevailed.
Mission:
The mission of The Cushman School is to develop students as responsible citizens and effective future leaders who maintain a positive approach to life.
The educational environment at our school fosters in students the qualities of virtue, responsibility, respect for self and others and nurtures the student in intellectual, physical and spiritual growth.
